The importance of reading at home

Have you ever wondered how some families seem to have a real reading culture at home?

Having worked with children and young teens, I always ask the same question, how often do you read? Usually, they admit that they only read as a necessity and not for pleasure.

Usually, they admit that they only read as a necessity and not for pleasure. When I was a young teen, I used to read for at least an hour every evening before bedtime and I really looked forward to this. I have started this again in our household and hope that leading by example is the way to persuade my children to read on a daily basis.

I have started to leave books out on the table and the children have been asking questions about them. Let's see if this will encourage them to read and to learn to enjoy reading like I do.

The key is to be consistent with the message and over time, reading will become part of their daily lives and therefore a healthy habit.
